Shard Planters

If you have visited the Lump blog recently you would know that not so long ago at Indesign the event we released a new range of intricately designed over sized sculptural planters.

The “Shard” planters belong to our range of vessels and were an internally driven study to explore a new aesthetic direction for “off the shelf” lump pieces. And these designs perfectly showcase and flex our large in-house fabrication muscle and capacity. At Lump we are truly proud of our in-house creative talent, expertise and innovative ideas that oscillate between our crew of artists and designers. And the “Shard” vessels, designed by Chris Herman are a true embodiment of Lumps declaration to Evolve. Design. Create.

The concept of the “Shard” is to appear as if the raw, textured rust patina has sprung from the earth like a shard of rock. The changing nature of this material is left bare to be admired and follow the seasons, punctuated and enhanced by individually selected planting. They are to appear bold and emphatic, a natural ironstone rock chiseled into shape by the landscape.Always conceived as a cluster of sculptures as well as a stand-alone sculpture, Chris said “Getting flexibility into the design so that it can be mounted both vertically and angled at 45 deg. was challenging”. Chris designed the “Shard” with a double footplate incorporated into the overall form facilitating both types of mounting, which allows for variation when composing a cluster of vessels in assorted sizes.

Although at Lump we consider the new range of “Shard” planters to be a new “off the shelf” range, nothing made by Lump is really ever technically “off the shelf”. And like other Lump pieces, care and consideration needs to be taken when installing the pieces on site or in your home. Due to the size and shape, “Shard” planters need to be securely bolted or chemically set into position. Carefully considered installation methods are also necessary so the vessels do not require to be entirely filled with soil. Instead, floating baskets are custom built for each piece and pot plants simply slot in avoiding any top-heavy balance issues. Available in three different sizes and made from Corten steel with a natural rusted finish. We think the Shard range is at its finest finished with a natural rusted patina, but we also offer a painted finish option featuring any of Lumps Faux finishes or a colour from your own selection.

Thanks to Chris Herman for helping me write this post.
