At Lump, we are incredibly proud of our in-house creative talent, technical expertise and fabrication capability. The “Shard” Planters are a powerful expression of that innovation showcasing the full strength of our in-house design and manufacturing capacity.

Inspired by Nature

The concept behind the “Shard” is simple yet striking: a raw, textured form that appears to have emerged from the earth like a shard of ironstone rock. Crafted from Corten steel, the planter’s evolving rust patina is intentionally left exposed, allowing it to weather naturally and shift with the seasons.

Its bold, sculptural presence is punctuated and softened by carefully selected planting, creating a dynamic interplay between rugged steel and organic greenery. Each piece feels as though it has been chiselled by the landscape itself.

Designed as Sculpture

The “Shard” was always conceived as both a standalone sculpture and part of a clustered sculptural installation.

As Chris explains:
“Getting flexibility into the design so that it can be mounted both vertically and angled at 45 degrees was challenging.”

To achieve this versatility, the “Shard” incorporates a cleverly engineered double footplate integrated into the form. This allows the planter to be mounted vertically or on a 45-degree angle, offering greater design flexibility when composing a cluster of vessels in varying sizes.

Whether installed individually or grouped together, the result is a striking sculptural landscape feature.

Installation Considerations

While Lump considers the “Shard” planters part of our new “off the shelf” collection, nothing we produce is ever truly standard. Each piece reflects our commitment to craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

Due to their distinctive size and angular form, “Shard” planters must be securely bolted or chemically set into position during installation. Proper anchoring ensures both safety and design integrity, whether installed in a residential garden, commercial landscape or architectural setting.
