Make your entrance BIG

At Lump, we spend a great deal of time in backyards. Much of our work is commissioned to enhance the private spaces of residential homes. However, we’re increasingly seeing design attention shift to the front of the home and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

One feature I don’t often talk about is the humble letterbox or the front door. Yet over the years, we’ve created an impressive collection of customised pieces that quite literally make a grand entrance.

Many of our light feature panels and screens have been adapted to incorporate functional elements. Today, the letterbox, front door, entrance gate and security fence are no longer purely practical components, they are opportunities for architectural expression and sculptural design.

It’s easy to see why these residential projects are among my favourites. They demonstrate how the final touches of a home can be brought forward transforming the façade into a statement for all to see.

There is a strong sculptural presence to this letterbox, complementing the scale and form of the interlocking wall that leads into the entrance garden. Positioned high above the fence line, it features bold contrasts in material and colour while clearly displaying the home’s address.

Enhancing the texture and aesthetic of the letterbox is a cluster of Lump Spheres, which subtly emerge from the upper levels of the residence, reinforcing the sculptural theme.

Inside the gate, visitors are welcomed by a Lump stainless steel ethanol fire bowl and the warm, textural tones of the Lump Rust powder coated finish, applied to the front door to create depth and material continuity.

These homes are not only exceptional examples of modern architecture they also showcase the versatility of Lump finishes, textures, sculpture and functional design elements.

This garden (above), designed by Steve Taylor from C.O.S Design and constructed by Hamilton Landscapes, sits on a significant elevation and was effectively built on a sand dune in the heart of Beaumaris.

A Lump Letterbox features prominently within the streetscape, alongside a series of retaining walls and a striking mix of architectural planting. Large floating steps create a pathway up to the pool and entertaining area, positioned in the front yard to take advantage of sweeping bay views.

Above the spa, a cantilevered pergola incorporates a Lump Ink Blot screen as a canopy, casting decorative reflections across the water.

A custom designed Lump Light Feature Panel is integrated among the retaining walls, serving as both a striking night time feature and part of the privacy strategy. The design, inspired by the local tea trees, continues through to the front gate, creating cohesion throughout the landscape.

Not all residential projects are the same and that’s precisely the point. By bringing sculptural and architectural elements to the front of your home, you create a powerful first impression. It’s an exciting place to begin when planning how to make your own grand entrance.
