Coming Home

This artwork was created by Bitja (Dixon Patten), a Yorta Yorta, Gunnai, Gunditjmara, Wemba Wemba and Djab Wurrung man, and lead artist at Bayila Creative. Guided by Boonwurrung Elder N’arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM, the piece honours the Boonwurrung people’s enduring connection to their saltwater Country and rich waterways.

Once home to abundant wildlife—including the magpie goose—much of this land has been impacted by colonisation. Conservation efforts, such as the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve, are working to restore habitat and bring species back.

The artwork reflects the importance of listening to Country and caring for it collectively. Flowing forms represent fresh and saltwater, central to Boonwurrung culture, identity and lore. At its heart, this piece celebrates the return of life and knowledge to Country.
