WESTERN WALL ART WORKS – APEC HAUS PAPUA NEW GUINEA
APEC Haus was commissioned by the Government of Papua New Guinea and designed by Jim Fitzpatrick Architects to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Port Moresby in November 2018. Following the summit, the building transitioned into a world-class conference and exhibition centre.
The architecture of this iconic structure, together with the accompanying public artworks produced by Lump, was designed to reflect the rich cultural traditions of trade and negotiation throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Jim Fitzpatrick Architects and Lump Studio worked in close collaboration with the National Museum and Art Gallery of Papua New Guinea to design and fabricate the Western Wall Artworks installed on the western façade of APEC Haus.
The objects featured within the illuminated light panels were selected by NMAG’s curatorial team to represent each of Papua New Guinea’s 22 provinces. With guidance from the NMAG board and staff, Lump Sculpture Studio meticulously traced each object and translated the artworks onto the panels, completing an installation that spans 80 metres in length.
Each individual artwork comprises three marine-grade aluminium panels, measuring a combined 4.6 metres in height and 3.6 metres in width. The panels are finished in a light powder coat that contrasts with the darker façade, allowing the works to softly illuminate the western wall as evening falls.
