Why do we LOVE Corten steel so much at Lump?

At Lump, we love Corten steel, not just because it looks extraordinary, but because it helps us create truly timeless pieces.

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, develops a rich, protective rusted surface that evolves beautifully over time. The warm, natural tones ranging from deep amber and burnt orange to earthy browns and subtle ochres complement almost any architectural palette. It pairs effortlessly with timber, concrete, stone and greenery, enhancing rather than competing with its surroundings.

Built to Last

Unlike mild steel, Corten steel is engineered to withstand the elements. When exposed to weather, it forms a stable, protective patina on its surface. This layer acts as a barrier, preventing ongoing corrosion and eliminating the risk of the material rusting through.

Even more remarkable is the way this protective coating continually regenerates. Each time the steel is exposed to moisture and air, the surface oxidises and reforms, strengthening its resistance while deepening its distinctive finish.

In other words, it doesn’t just age, it improves.

The Practical Realities of Corten Steel

As much as we admire it, Corten steel does come with characteristics worth understanding:

It is approximately twice the tensile strength of mild steel.

It will leach rust stains onto surrounding surfaces during the weathering process.

There is no permanent way to seal the rust layer or prevent staining entirely.

Its colour and texture will continue to evolve depending on environmental exposure.

When used thoughtfully, these qualities are part of its appeal raw, authentic and honest.

Crafting with Corten at Lump

At Lump, we fabricate everything from 1.6mm and 3mm sheet steel through to oversized panels and substantial 6mm plate. Working with Corten steel requires expertise and precision.

Structural welding demands specialised, low-carbon welding wire specified to strict BHP standards. Specific welding techniques must be used to ensure weld points weather and corrode at the same rate as the surrounding steel maintaining both structural integrity and visual consistency.

For a more uniform and accelerated rusted finish, we often sandblast the surface prior to weathering. This process ensures a consistent patina and helps the oxidation process develop more evenly.

A Material with Architectural Legacy

Corten steel has been embraced by some of the world’s most influential sculptors and architects. Richard Serra, in particular, redefined large-scale sculpture through his bold and masterful use of weathering steel.

We think that’s pretty inspiring.
