Installing Sculptures. Things to consider.

When commissioning a sculpture, it’s essential to consider the installation process early in the planning stage to avoid unexpected complications.

Outdoor Sculpture By Lump

No two projects are the same, and each site presents its own unique conditions and challenges.

Talk to Us

We’ve installed sculptures in a wide range of environments and understand how to anticipate potential challenges before they arise. The more information we have at the outset, the better we can plan for a seamless installation.

We encourage clients to provide site photos, measurements, drawings and any other relevant details prior to installation to ensure the process runs smoothly. Where required, a member of the Lump Studio team can visit your site to consult in person and recommend practical solutions for the best possible outcome.

Accessibility

Assess your site carefully and identify any obstacles that may restrict access particularly if you are installing a large-scale sculpture. Consider pathways, overhead clearances, landscaping, and delivery access to avoid complications on installation day.

Footings

Outdoor sculptures require an appropriate concrete footing to ensure safe and stable installation. Lump can advise on the correct dimensions and footing type to suit your sculpture and site conditions, ensuring long-term structural integrity.

Lighting

Some of our sculptures incorporate integrated lighting, while others benefit from considered external illumination. We can provide guidance on lighting placement and techniques to maximise visual impact. Custom lighting solutions can also be designed and integrated directly into the artwork where desired.

Baseplates and Plinths

Certain sculptures can be installed using a simple base plate secured to a concrete footing, which can be discreetly dressed with stone or incorporated into surrounding garden beds.

In other cases, a sculpture is best presented elevated on a plinth. The scale and positioning of your piece will determine the appropriate plinth dimensions. Speak with our team about custom-made plinth options we’ll help you select the right size and finish to complement both the sculpture and its setting.

Security

While not always top of mind, security is an important consideration particularly for sculptures installed in publicly accessible areas. If your piece is located near street frontage or within a public space, we can incorporate specialised security fixings to ensure it remains safe and secure for years to come.
